Boldt Castle
Improvement Projects Continue:
At its regular monthly meeting held on Thursday, December 21st, the Thousand Islands Bridge Authority, owners of historic Boldt Castle and the Boldt Yacht House announced plans for a major interior rehabilitation project for Boldt Castle and design study for another. The Authority will continue with its progression of improvements at the Boldt Castle Facilities by completely rehabilitating the Boldt Castle dining room. Work on the Boldt Castle dining room began this Fall with the Authority’s staff, assigned to the Boldt Facilities, performing the work. Improvements to the Boldt Castle dining room, which measures 40 foot long x 26 foot wide and 14 foot high includes 1,040 square foot of hardwood flooring, red mahogany wainscoting with fabric inlays, ornate red mahogany ceiling beams, period lighting, two brass chandeliers and seven all sconces. The Boldt Castle dining room will be furnished with an original Boldt family dining room table, buffet serving table and china cabinets. New windows, window treatments and multi-color paint scheme will complete the dining room project.
The Boldt Castle kitchens located on the Castle’s first floor and the Boldt family’s bedroom suites on the second floor will be completed continuing the Authority’s many accomplishments with interior improvements to Boldt Castle. The Authority has accepted a proposal from GYMO, Architecture, Engineering and Land Surveying, PC of Watertown, New York to prepare design and specifications for the Boldt family bedroom suites and kitchen rehabilitation projects. The awarded contract to GMYO for professional services for the Boldt Castle kitchens and Boldt family bedroom suites is in the amount of $113,250.
The Boldt Castle dining room, Boldt family bedroom suites and kitchen rehabilitation projects will compliment previously completed interior projects in Boldt Castle, including Ballroom, Library, Billards Room, Reception Room, Grand Staircase, Elevator, Stain Glass Dome, Wall and Ornate Plaster repairs, Period Furnishings, Lighting and over 1,700 square foot of marble flooring.
With the completion of the Dining Room, kitchens and Boldt family bedroom suites the Authority will have accomplished never-before achieved finishes to Boldt Castle. The Castle’s namesake and original builder George C. Boldt halted all construction of his Castle in 1904 due to the untimely death of his wife, Louise, for whom the Castle was to be built.
During it’s nearly 30 years of ownership of Boldt Castle and the Boldt Yacht House, the Authority has invested nearly $20 million dollars in rehabilitation efforts and improvements to these historic landmarks. At the same time, these facilities have witnessed over 5 million visitors and have hosted over 750 weddings in as many years, providing incalculable value to this region’s international tourism industry.
Boldt Castle will open on May 12th for the 2007 season and will remain open daily until October 14th. Boldt Castle will also open for the weekend of October 20th and October 21st. The Boldt Yacht House will operate daily from May 19th until September 30th.

Past Renovation Projects:
In the past few years numerous improvements have been accomplished, including rehabilitation of the Power House, Dove Cote, Heart Island Gazebo, Alster Tower, the Boldt Castle Yacht House and the main castle. As of the 2001 season, the Heart Island Entry Arch is adorned with three, seven-foot tall stags (or deer) which are symbolic of the Boldt family crest.
Recent improvements to the main castle include the installation of 1,700 square foot of marble flooring in the grand lobby, and completion of the grand staircase and the stain glass dome in the upper ceiling. Last year saw the complete rehabilitation of the ballroom and completion of the original elevator. Other interior spaces that have been completely rehabilitated include the library, billiards room and reception room.
Another new feature to Heart Island is the completely restored overlook, consisting of an elaborate 170-foot granite retaining wall on the island's terraced grounds. The retaining wall and overlook are reinforced poured concrete punctuated with turrets and faced with native granite stone.
This year will see the complete rehabilitation of the dining room.
